[Game 10] Epilogue

That little diversion aside, with no sign of reoccurring, a few hours pass with the group together and Zoey is humming as she gathers materials for the magic circle in the basement.

There's still time before midnight to have whatever moments with everyone else you like before going home, but you can feel in the air that it'll be soon.

Kieran freezes up a little, smile wavering.

[goes sit with him]

Are you okay?

"...not really, no." He sort of shoves a half-smile back into place.

He's a moron.

"He made it about his survival, Fon. I can't -- I'm not the kind of dick who can be like, whatever, I don't care, make it about me. If he's telling me he needs to prioritize his survival, what the hell am I supposed to do..."

I know but he's still a moron.

"I'm just... trying really hard not to feel really really sorry for myself right now..."

Why would you feel sorry for yourself?

"Because I just lost one of my closest friends?" Kieran rubs his face. "Because he was something fucking incredible in my life and he doesn't want to be there any more. ...In a nutshell."

I don't think you lost him.

"If he wants to avoid me for the rest of my life, he's more than capable of it. I don't even feel like I can freaking talk to him right now. I should probably leave right after everyone's gone."

As much as he tells himself he doesn't, he does care. And given the history of this family, it's a matter of months before something else happens. You'll see him again.

"I know he cares, man. But cutting and running is what Tristan does when it'll be troublesome to him. I've seen it a few times. I just can't cope with this right now, sorry..."

... I spoke to the girl.

"Who-?"

Zoey, the demon that came with him.

Kieran doesn't look at her, just nods. "Yeah?"

As far as she knows, Tristan is stuck in hell politics-- I think there might be more to it and he's letting himself be underestimated but I can't be sure.

"I did figure that much," Kieran mutters miserably, not quite able to look up at Fon, plucking at the outside seam of his jeans.

I... I think he'll try to change his own situation. But it's hard to tell how long it'll take him.

Kieran shakes his head. "I've got sixty to eighty years left, Fon, and if he's changing things it'll be on a demon's schedule, right? I just -- I want to have hope but it kind of hurts a little too much right now? Too soon?"

I'm sorry.

His voice has gone kind of hoarse, and he knots his fingers together. "I'm really bad at this, honestly? I suck at dealing with my own feelings on a good day. I -- look, I ran away from home when I was barely a teenager because my parents rejected me to the point I decided, fuck this shit, I'll go it alone. I've had a lot of kindness and -- I appreciate people! I like people. I'm not... bitter or anything, but actually... caring a lot, really trusting people, I don't do it often, because it's... hard for me to be honest with people about situations I've found myself in..."

I have a really good grasp of what that is like... and I just fed her, so I'm not exactly in a good emotional place either.

"Fed her...?" He shakes his head. "I'm just -- really scared and really hurt right now, honestly, and really fucking humiliated, and I know my buttons are being pushed but that doesn't make me not feel like the bottom has been fucking ripped out of my world."
