[Game 10] Epilogue

That little diversion aside, with no sign of reoccurring, a few hours pass with the group together and Zoey is humming as she gathers materials for the magic circle in the basement.

There's still time before midnight to have whatever moments with everyone else you like before going home, but you can feel in the air that it'll be soon.

I... I think he'll try to change his own situation. But it's hard to tell how long it'll take him.

Kieran shakes his head. "I've got sixty to eighty years left, Fon, and if he's changing things it'll be on a demon's schedule, right? I just -- I want to have hope but it kind of hurts a little too much right now? Too soon?"

I'm sorry.

His voice has gone kind of hoarse, and he knots his fingers together. "I'm really bad at this, honestly? I suck at dealing with my own feelings on a good day. I -- look, I ran away from home when I was barely a teenager because my parents rejected me to the point I decided, fuck this shit, I'll go it alone. I've had a lot of kindness and -- I appreciate people! I like people. I'm not... bitter or anything, but actually... caring a lot, really trusting people, I don't do it often, because it's... hard for me to be honest with people about situations I've found myself in..."

I have a really good grasp of what that is like... and I just fed her, so I'm not exactly in a good emotional place either.

"Fed her...?" He shakes his head. "I'm just -- really scared and really hurt right now, honestly, and really fucking humiliated, and I know my buttons are being pushed but that doesn't make me not feel like the bottom has been fucking ripped out of my world."

He almost tugs away, then takes it, squeezing too hard.

I'm still... processing. But Tristan cares about you, regardless of what he said.

"He never denied that he liked me. Just -- he has to put himself first, and wants me far away from all of this, because getting too close to me puts him in danger. Which, yeah, okay! I can suck that up. But. I'm just -- fuck, yeah, I guess I'm kind of mourning what we had, and like hell I'm not doing the things that make me feel like there's a fucking reason I even exist, even if he doesn't want me to."

[... squeezes his hand and keeps quiet]

"I've never -- really felt like I had a reason, you know? Like, of course I had dreams of being a pro athlete or whatever, but you know why that'd be a nightmare. And --whatever. I kind of settled into being a professor because I wanted to learn and research and write essays and teach, but... since I learned about this stuff, demons and whatever, since I started to research, I've been able to help people. I'm here right now because Robin was like, oh yeah, that guy who helped save your life that one time is moping about his Christmas, can he come down? But the key part is I -- helped save someone's life. In something that -- most people don't know about, so they can't help anything with. Reading and researching something that interests me can really ... help people? So he tells me, go the hell home to New York and never get involved in this again, and what does that even -- I can't lose two of the most important things in my life in one blow. I just can't. Even if it'll piss him off."

I don't think you could get out of this even if you wanted to.

"Maybe that's why he's so pissed." Kieran sighs and drops his head forward.

... he'll stay involved as long as you are... I think he'll try to go up.

"I'm really not sure that has anything to do with my involvement."

He's good at chess.

This is just a theory but I think you're a weak point. If he's trying to go up and it gets out he has human attachments, you could become a target.

"...I know that..."

If I'm right, his end goal is to have a high enough rank that he will not be questioned over having human attachments and he is pushing you away because he's not sure of how long it'll take him.

"The trouble is I'm already known to be an attachment of his, so if the risk's there anyway, I'd rather be able to actively -- help, somehow? I don't know. Maybe that makes me more of a shitty friend than not trying to do it..."

I would agree, except I don't know how to help him. I suppose his ability to get humans on his side could be considered an asset.

Kieran rubs at his eyes. "Mmh..."

Even without Tristan involved, you are probably already on their radar due to your connection with the Bellcourts.

Kieran is silent a few moments, thinking. "...probably part of why he's so frustrated is that to some extent -- I don't know how much, because I tend to miss large chunks of things -- he did once mark me as his." He rubs the back of his neck. "He put a mark on me to warn other demons to stay away. Property of Tristan. Not a big deal when he was just tooling around vacationing but then he got in trouble and I went to check up on him and try to help and got attacked by the crows, and he got mad as hell and ripped the mark off me. But..."

He put you in danger... he put you in danger without meaning to, so he doesn't want to risk it again.
