[Day 4] Hell

Some of you are discussing serious lawyering with the most serious lawyer. Others are reuniting with old friends, or meeting new ones(?) . . . and some of you are just flat-out riding bad decision dinosaur trains.

"Sorry?" Tristan echoes, sitting on the edge of the bed, looking up at Fon.

I probably would have held back on any choices if I had known you'd be here.

Tristan blinks at him. "What?"

... it was the kind of decision I would have liked a sounding board for.

"Oh, yes, use me to your heart's content, then," Tristan scoffs, leaning back on one hand.

What are the charges against you?

"In a word: tax evasion." Pause. "Or two words." Tristan's smile is tight. "I'm greedy, self-serving, and avoidant, which are all things to be expected of demons, but Hell still has its rules."

On what grounds are they keeping you here?

"All demons are expected to, you know, come back here once in a while. There are regulations about how long you're allowed to stay on Earth and all that. It's part of your tether." He leans back on the bed, tail swishing off the side of it. "You're also supposed to damn a certain number of souls, etcetera etcetera, quota depending on your rank and who you work for. Demons also owe a certain amount of their power to the higher-ups—an incubus isn't exactly high-ranking. We can keep power for ourselves depending on how much we work," his eyes glitter, "and how effectively, but we also have to give back to those we work for. It's a little like a fucked up socialist system, only with less of the redistributing and more of just the taking."

Yes, but is this common? Are most demons actually hunted down for tax evasion? In most human societies, only a very small percentage of people actually get caught.

Tristan's mouth curves, eyes drifting closed. "I'd gone about six hundred years without getting caught," he says. "So, what do you suspect might we conclude from this?"

You're being held because of your involvement with Lucia and Bastien.

"Do you think Hell really cares about two little human souls? We have billions."

I don't think they want souls, they are trying to locate the missing demon and this demon is important enough that they flew us in from a different dimension.

"And?" Tristan prompts.

Maybe they think Lucia knows more than she's letting on, or maybe they hope that if they're convicted he will turn up. I think you're collateral.

"And why would serious bignames be the ones actually getting involved in the court case?" He touches Fon's forearm, lightly.

Part of it is a pissing contest between the head prosecutor and-- [glances at his arm]... this case will set a precedent; if played right even the losing lawyers will gain some prestige.

I imagine they also have some relations with the missing duke, so there must be some personal investment.

"There are still those above even them. Our friend the missing duke is of a level above."

How often does a human gain any kind of influence over a demon that high-ranked?

Tristan's lips curve. "Have you heard of the Bible?"

... yes.

The Bible is anywhere between two and four thousand years old.

"That's pretty old," Tristan agrees.
