IMPORTANT QUESTIONS!! I'm really curious as to how Kieran came about and his role on everything, and also I wanna know what happens when he and Tristan meet again.
Kieran is originally from The St. Dominic's Boys School Mystery game and was invented as a Potential Suspect for the murder that happened there, along with Tristan and 6 others. I can take more about the things we wanted to decide about his origins before that game, if you want, or quickly summarize the events and his role there and how it's changed since. Zazzle and I plan to do a little thing with Tristan and Kieran as part of the endgame stuff for this, probably tomorrow when we are less completely dead than we were today haha.
Zazzle was running Crowboss and I imagine she'll answer this tomorrow
OK SO when we were planning the murder mystery game we went, ok, we need 8 suspects each of which will have distinct personalities, open and hidden relationships of various kinds with each other, positive triggers and negative triggers, and secrets. We basically made character sheets and listed a bunch of these for each (except because we are incredibly haphazard we sometimes forgot to fill them out). Getting there involved a lot of brainstorming on each -- the reason for wanting these lists or at least a general idea of all of them was because in a murder mystery you need each of the suspects to have things hidden, to have things that will make them more inclined to clam up, and things that'll make them more inclined to share info. So we had a lot of "I want a tiny child psychic omg but he's hiding the fact he's psychic and everyone just thinks he's crazy and ok to be fair he also kind of is" for Madison, and "IS SECRETLY A DEMON LAWL and is sleeping with half the student body and the reason the person he's TAing for is always sick is that he's always draining her" for Tristan.
For Kieran it was "We don't have a genderqueer character yet so Kieran can be that -- let's make him a transman and passing and hiding that from the student body. Negative triggers will be looking into that because UH, AREN'T YOU HERE TO SOLVE A MYSTERY, NOT PLAY GENDER DETECTIVE, ASSHOLES and positive triggers will be bros, people who engage with his interests (soccer and chess primarily), etc". So we started with the premises of these basic 'traits' (Secret, What He Likes, and What He Hates) and grew a personality from there. He's basically kind of a hipster, but a nice, polite boy who's a bit of a leader type -- he's co-captain of the soccer club, captain of the chess club, iirc he was in the debate club as well. Well-spoken, intelligent, and sporty.
Ftr his 'sheet' was this (the other people mentioned are people at the school, mostly suspects) ... well it was mostly this, I filled it out with things we also talked about aloud only:

Ultimately, he'd like to play sports competitively (but doesn't think this would likely work out) Positive Trigger: Engaging with his interests and hobbies Negative Trigger: The players playing "gender detective" for their own curiosity, or trying to rest a case on it, rather than just because they're investigating all secrets/suspicious behaviour. (As in, he'll give them some leeway but if they cross a line he just won't put up with that BS.). Close Friends: Tristan, Ken (minor NPC) Nemeses: n/a Murderer? N. Personality: The quiet one. He comes across as very easy-going, the sort of person who's surrounded by outgoing or loud people of all kinds (see: Sports team, see: lol Zachary), so he tends to be overlooked. A very "normal, boy-next-door" personality. Physical description: Side-swept brown hair, blue eyes, medium height. He has a thin build, all straight lines and knobby joints. His features are relatively soft, in a sort of Zac Efron way. Secret:Is a transman and still biologically female. KEY POINTS FOR DISCUSSION -Is sleeping with Tristan; is aware that Tristan is extremely, ALMOST SUPERNATURALLY!1 in tune with gender and sexuality and expressions thereof, but does not know Tristan is a demon. - Co-captain of the soccer club, which Jake is on, can comment on Jake's personality and habits and problems with teachers - Captain of the Chess club, which Zachary is on, can comment on Zachary's personality and habits, as well as his attachment to the victim

Once we actually started playing him this more or less stuck but he started to shine as a gem of a character both due to his relation to a character who would be important to the plot (he and Tristan are genuinely friends, which Tristan is still sort of bemused about) and the fact he's got an ideal personality and set of skills to start filling in gaps we thought would be useful to have filled in for the players (the Amateur Demonologist roll -- we need it to be a human playing the role of information sponge -- a character who's smart, he's the sort who when he learns about things he tries to learn everything possible, but he's also cautious and laid back and not the kind to get all emotionally heated up or make stupid moves). So Kieran started to seem perfect for this.
That more or less came up after the game though -- during the game he really won us over in a spontaneous thing when he and his bro-bff Ken (co-captain of the soccer team, not a suspect in the murder) were horsing around playing stupid snow soccer and we just really fell in love with him (and Ken, too, who basically insisted on growing a characterization and being popular and adorable despite us trying to make him a one-off totally background unimportant guy).
One of the key changes for him in the game was that when all of the shit went down it came out really publicly that Tristan was a demon! Like Kieran said in this game just now, like, how do you even turn around and suddenly find out that your TA is a demon? That is fucked up, how does life go like that. And then Tristan, being Tristan, immediately fucked off after and ditched everyone from the school.
Immediately after the game we spent a long time in private roleplay (via email) working out if they'd leave it at this -- Tristan sent Kieran a private email basically as a LOL YAH I BET THAT WAS A SHOCK anyway it was nice to meet you and all but I'm ditching town seeya -- and figuring out where the characters would go from here -- would they stay in touch? Would Kieran evolve into that role we needed filled because he'd have learned demons were real, and relevant to him, and start looking things up? etc.
Obviously they DID stay in touch, and Kieran DID fit that role, and he recurred briefly in the Dundee game where he and Tristan were hanging out (though Kieran had come there with Madison on vacation -- both are wards of the school's headmaster, actually, so that's what happened there -- and it was claimed he had run into Tristan 'coincidentally' there) where he also helped them out with demonology info.

nm I ruined picture forever and opencanvas wouldn't let me do anything about it so instead all I could do was cry and close it and give up AFTER AN HOUR OF WORKING ON IT I should have saved along the way.
VERSE EVOLUTION ok first I need to like. Talk about how Zazzle and I did the first cry wolf. It went something like this.
Zazzle: "Hey let's co-run a horror-themed, like, haunted house cry wolf." Haru: "OK!" Zazzle: "I'll put up sign-ups, we can plot later." Haru: "Ok!" [Next day] Haru: [gets out of bed] Zazzle: "Hey honey I put the first post up and now I'm going to work, run it for me." Haru: "BUT WE DON'T HAVE A PLOT" Zazzle: "I'll email kbye!"
So for the first day we were winging it 100% based off Zazzle's initial description and I was running a creepy haunted house exploration by myself and crying a little constantly, also she had forgotten to tell me who the wolves were.
Ask as many direct smaller questions as you want and I at least will have an easier time talking forever because otherwise I don't even know where to staaaart
BASTIEN IS MY SOUL ANIMAL and David is kind of my baaabyyyy. Like I don't think I have ever let Haru play David ever. We switch off on most characters . . . I was going to make a chart showing like "percentage of time we spend playing certain characters" but I am kind of lazy.
Tristan is also primarily "mine" and I enjoy the fuck out of him.
Elli is primarily Zazzle's though she sort of became 'mine' after Luka moved into her. LUKA IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITES he is ...weird. I would enjoy playing Luka off yours sometime.

Kit is basically my soul animal to Zazzle's Bastien, and I also really enjoy Kieran because I can have long threads about eating jalapenos idefk. Yeah we switch off on almost everyone and we both love all characters a shitton so it's really hard to pick.
ok so we had a corpse that was reappearing random places and shit and the shepherd was a super creepy disembodied badtouch spirit voice and slowly we pulled things together that was like
OK IT WAS A LORD WHO GOT DEMON POSSESSED AND WAS EVIL AND WAS RUNNING THIS CRY WOLF GAME BECAUSE HOT DAMN HE WAS EVIL AND HE WAS GOING TO FUCKING KILL PEOPLE ONE AT A TIME BITCHES
And the corpse was his LOYAL BUTLER who had died horribly under his care BUT STILL BELIEVED IN THE GOODNESS OF HIS LORD'S HEART and couldn't move on while he was trying to get his lord to Believe In Goodness and redeem himself.
And once we had that we had a lot of room to play with things! We like had opposing forces -- the lord was in denial his butler was still here, the butler was trying to get attention but was a ghost and was so old and tired at that point and worn out that he was barely clinging to existence and couldn't do anything but tap and play music on his music box and shit like that.
So that is what we played with and then we were like WE NEED TO ESTABLISH THEM AS CHARACTERS NOT JUST CREEPY BACKGROUND SHIT so the players found letters in a box and that is how Kit and Bastien as characters were born, basically.
From there it was pulling it together.
Now, at this point it was supposed to be a one-shot game so we had a lot of stuff in there just for ambiance LIKE WHEN THEY LOOKED THROUGH BASTIEN'S BOOKS PEOPLE GOT PAPERCUTS THAT WOULDN'T STOP BLEEDING.
Anyway we finished the game, the players pulled together and got Bastien sort of redeemed, it was HARDCORE AWESOME OK and we were like "Hey that was a cool one-shot."
Then a few months later we were like "we should do another! But Kit and Bastien moved on. WHAT DO."
So we decided, ok, bastien left a lot of fucking awful demonic artifacts lying around, the demon that possessed him was still there, etc, and despite being a mansion out in the middle of fuck-all nowhere eventually someone would move in. So we invented a twin brother and sister and said, ok, their family moved in, the brother ran into the same demon that bastien had been possessed by and started killing the rest of their family. The sister caught him at it and stabbed him to try to protect her parents but COULD NOT SAVE ANYONE and a different demon who was also in the house then showed up and offered to try to help her get her brother back. She pacted with him, he possessed her brother's corpse, they are playing brother and sister and she is now a witch and she is running to the end of her contract and is out of time and needs a big human sacrifice to extend it but she is not a bad person and she is like WHAT DO and there is cry wolf as a result.
As you can see we planned this more. A lot was spontaneous and off the cuff but OH HEY LET'S BRING KIT AND BASTIEN BACK! We can have her have called Kit's soul into a clay golem vessel due to his attachment to the house and then omg Bastien will come back to GET HIS FUCKING BOYFRIEND BUTLER BACK GODDAMMIT and we'll see what the players do with this situation!

Ok so those twins were Elli and Luka! Only Luka is of course not the real Luka but a demon. AND THERE WAS A BIG CONFLICT AT THE END and tensions and people being like DO WE KILL HIM WHILE SHE IS TRYING TO PROTECT HIM and he ended up going into her body with his permission and she let him stay and as a kind of I WILL SHOW THE WINCHESTERS THIS WAS WORTH IT EVEN THOUGH THEY DOUBTED IT she started going out and slaying demons and stopping people from making HER MISTAKES and Luka is along like

Luka, btw, ended up being a demon possessing the book that made people bleed because we were like FUCK THESE LOOSE AMBIENT-ONLY ENDS LET US DO SOMETHING WITH THEM.
So from there we were like "Yay we can have a continuing plot around Elluka because they are hella great material for that as they will be investigating things" and started working on the side at other characters to be foils to them (brother/sister duo HMM IS THIS FAMILIAR) but in the meantime we decided to run another only loosely connected one, which was the murder mystery game, and introduce a couple of the characters we were planning on tying into Elluka stuff from a more... fiction-based perspective (Madison, Tristan). It was at this stage where we came up with Lucia ("Girl Solomon" "omg hot asmodeus butler") and Kincade actually though it was a year later before we even intro'd Kincade.
So after the murder mystery we talked more about our planned Girl Solomon and decided that since unlike fiction the players are the protagonist (in fiction Elluka'd be I guess) we should introduce them to Lucia straight up and could throw Elluka in later. Lucia's evolution was basically this:
Mikogami from Sekirei + Neon from Hunter x Hunter + seal of solomon = profit.
We had come up with her brother who she loved but was resentful of (foil to Elli), who was barely a surviving entity with Asmodeus sapping his life force, and her in denial about him being there trying to help her (foil to Bastien) to try to continue the feel of the verse.
So we started with a code-based cry wolf game of Lucia 'testing' them, then after she was pleased we ran a second, straight RP (done in irc and with logs) of her using the players to help her since she'd vetted them. The players, of course, learned about David's state and that Sidney was Asmodeus etc and that theyw anted to do something about this, though that wouldn't come into fruition until later. We also threw Elli, Tristan, and Madison back into this game (and Kieran because he decided to become an autonomous character as I rambled about earlier), working separately because the thing Lucia Really Wanted Complete was the sword, which contained the demon that had possessed both Bastien and the original Luka so there was some severe loose ends for Elli there. Groups of players worked with different of these sets and it came together at a confrontation at the end with the sword, which ended up under Lucia's control partially.
Then it came time for the anniversary of the first game and we were like, man, Kit and Bastien moved on again but they'd be perfect, WHAT DO, so we were like, ok, Lucia is a descendant of Bastien's, why not. He stuck his dick in anything anyway. She's repeating history here. But say Bastien... we know he was fighting the sword even as it drove him crazier. SAY HE SEALED PART OF IT AWAY and then died with the secret!! She will want that, and she's connected by blood so she can call him back and then we did a BASTIEN HEART GAME. And tied in some real world stuff at the time (introducing Dr. Filangieri and the ability to get rid of Asmodeus if they wanted) and the method the players did this is why the current game played as it did.
I'm getting vaguer as we go on, but taht's because more elements of what happened here will be relevant in the future. But yeah that brought us to the current game.
Basically, to sum up, although it started from a one-shot idea, we developed more and more plot around what's already happened and it branches out more and more. BUT we tend to revolve around similar themes and roles: Brothers and Sisters Human/demon love (is it ok? Is it ever ok? When is it ok?) -- actually, all sorts of boundary-crossing love in its various forms and the gray shades of morality relating to love Possession The role of demonic artifacts in fucking people up The nature of demons, humans, and angels The Secret Supernatural ...etc.

So from there we were like "Yay we can have a continuing plot around Elluka because they are hella great material for that as they will be investigating things" and started working on the side at other characters to be foils to them (brother/sister duo HMM IS THIS FAMILIAR) but in the meantime we decided to run another only loosely connected one, which was the murder mystery game, and introduce a couple of the characters we were planning on tying into Elluka stuff from a more... fiction-based perspective (Madison, Tristan). It was at this stage where we came up with Lucia ("Girl Solomon" "omg hot asmodeus butler") and Kincade actually though it was a year later before we even intro'd Kincade.
So after the murder mystery we talked more about our planned Girl Solomon and decided that since unlike fiction the players are the protagonist (in fiction Elluka'd be I guess) we should introduce them to Lucia straight up and could throw Elluka in later. Lucia's evolution was basically this:
Mikogami from Sekirei + Neon from Hunter x Hunter + seal of solomon = profit.
We had come up with her brother who she loved but was resentful of (foil to Elli), who was barely a surviving entity with Asmodeus sapping his life force, and her in denial about him being there trying to help her (foil to Bastien) to try to continue the feel of the verse.
So we started with a code-based cry wolf game of Lucia 'testing' them, then after she was pleased we ran a second, straight RP (done in irc and with logs) of her using the players to help her since she'd vetted them. The players, of course, learned about David's state and that Sidney was Asmodeus etc and that theyw anted to do something about this, though that wouldn't come into fruition until later. We also threw Elli, Tristan, and Madison back into this game (and Kieran because he decided to become an autonomous character as I rambled about earlier), working separately because the thing Lucia Really Wanted Complete was the sword, which contained the demon that had possessed both Bastien and the original Luka so there was some severe loose ends for Elli there. Groups of players worked with different of these sets and it came together at a confrontation at the end with the sword, which ended up under Lucia's control partially.
Then it came time for the anniversary of the first game and we were like, man, Kit and Bastien moved on again but they'd be perfect, WHAT DO, so we were like, ok, Lucia is a descendant of Bastien's, why not. He stuck his dick in anything anyway. She's repeating history here. But say Bastien... we know he was fighting the sword even as it drove him crazier. SAY HE SEALED PART OF IT AWAY and then died with the secret!! She will want that, and she's connected by blood so she can call him back and then we did a BASTIEN HEART GAME. And tied in some real world stuff at the time (introducing Dr. Filangieri and the ability to get rid of Asmodeus if they wanted) and the method the players did this is why the current game played as it did.

Basically, to sum up, although it started from a one-shot idea, we developed more and more plot around what's already happened and it branches out more and more. BUT we tend to revolve around similar themes and roles:
Brothers and Sisters
Human/demon love (is it ok? Is it ever ok? When is it ok?) -- actually, all sorts of boundary-crossing love in its various forms and the gray shades of morality relating to love
Possession
The role of demonic artifacts in fucking people up
The nature of demons, humans, and angels
The Secret Supernatural
...etc.
